About Me I am Gunjan Utreja — a mom of two lovely daughters, an avid hiker, technologist, and the founder of MyTrailPals. I am a community leader, passionate about bringing people together for the greater good and giving back through connection. I also co-founded the women’s hiking community HikeQueen Buddies , where thousands of women have found strength, confidence, and belonging on the trails. Journey on trails My journey on trails started in 2018 when a friend asked if I would like to hike over the weekends. Without a second thought, I said, “I would love to.” All I needed was a trail pal. We began hiking every weekend and loved every bit of it. With every hike, I felt awe — a magical connection with Mother Nature — and a deeper connection with myself that I had never experienced before. I felt refreshed and energized after each hike, ready to take on the coming week’s personal and professional challenges. We shared our experiences on social media, and slowly friends — and their friends — started joining us. Without realizing it, we were inspiring fellow women and building a community. Today, it’s a private Facebook group of 1,000+ women across Silicon Valley. This journey has empowered many along the way, made fitness fun, and created a much-needed support system — physically, mentally, socially, and even professionally. On the trails, conversations felt different. People opened up. Titles faded. We weren’t just professionals, moms, founders, or job seekers — we were humans walking side by side. That’s when I started noticing something powerful: movement and nature were creating connection in a way meeting rooms often don’t. As we made our way through the trail, one of the hikers suddenly stopped, turned to me, and hugged me tightly. Stepping onto this trail, surrounded by people who accepted her without judgment, was the first time she felt like she could breathe again. That moment humbled me. I always carry chai on the hikes I lead, and there’s something special about sitting at the summit, sipping from warm cups, catching breath & simply being present in that moment. Recently, on a freezing morning at Mission Peak in Fremont, California(the most popular trail), 40 of us decided to take this tradition a step further. Along with my hiking community, we prepared chai for everyone on the trail. We came together and served chai to over 200+ hikers. Seeing strangers pause, take a sip, and smile in that shared moment of warmth—it was incredible. That morning, the trail wasn’t just a path; it was a space of kindness, culture, and connection.” “These moments remind me why I do what I do. Always check the weather: Before heading out, it's crucial to check the weather forecast to prepare for any unexpected conditions and ensure a safe and enjoyable hike. Carry a basic first aid kit: Accidents can happen, so it's essential to have a first aid kit on hand to address any minor injuries or emergencies that may arise on the trail. - Gratitude In Nature’s Realm: Part-4 Discover Unknown Directions As You Chart A Familiar Path In the Outdoors
Ever heard about life changing moments? We all have them in different measures at least once in our lifetimes. Seema Mangla’s story is no different and started with a small person setback hike. We all have a destination in mind. We are so focussed on the goal that we miss the transformative journey that enables us to get there. And this journey includes missteps, failures and setbacks. When going on a hike, little did Seema know that a stumble on the route would mark a turning point in her life. The realization she obtained after that, set the stage for a remarkable transformation, and ultimately a new direction in life. Let us look at Seema’s inspirational story. "I am Seema Mangla, I have been hiking for almost 6 years now. I have done quite a few hikes, both single day long hikes and also a few multi-day hikes! It has been a fulfilling journey, experience with nature providing unique insights into resilience. For me Hiking is a journey, not a goal. It is the whole process of going through diverse terrains, unknowns, unpredictable weather, trusting strangers on the way, and making new friends. It has broadened the perspective of life by exposing myself to unknown situations. When I hike, tough terrain/weather/lack of water made me realize the value of comfort I always had at home. During one of the hikes, I fell down and had a minor knee injury, but I didn’t pay attention and continued hiking, and it turned into knee arthritis. At that point I realized how important it is to take care of my body. I started doing group yoga classes in my office and it tremendously helped me in my knee heath. Even having knee arthritis I could do tough hikes, like Mt Whitney, Mt. Shasta. Mt. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp and many more. All this I owe to my Yoga practices, I didn’t only gain strength and flexibility physically but mentally also I achieved calmness and stability. This motivated me to become a yoga teacher and quit my long journey of being an engineer. I opened my own yoga studio Yoga4wellness and started teaching others! Checkout google reviews here. Being in Nature and my yoga practices have helped in building the resiliency to navigate through life challenges with a smile 😊” For Gunjan Utreja, Founder of MyTrailPals, working in the EDA and Semiconductor industry as a customer solution expert for 17+ years was the result of a decision she took long ago. It was consciously taken after seeing her family’s fortunes deplete with changing trends in their agriculture dependent business. The debt took several years to pay off and Gunjan was determined that she wanted a job with stable income more than anything. One journey she took in 2017 changed everything. “A friend reached out to me to ask if I would like to hike over weekends, and without a thought, I said “would love to”. All I needed was a trail pal. We hiked every weekend 2-3 hrs and it felt rejuvenating, refreshing and energizing us to take on weekly personal and professional challenges with a 😊. We began sharing our experiences on social media, and slowly friends, extended friends started joining us on the hike. Over 5 years, the community grew from a WhatsApp group of a few to a Hike Queen Buddies Facebook community of ~500 women. Every trail we explored became much more than an outing. It's a journey that inspired many to join, lead, made fitness fun many. Above everything, connections made on trails became a much needed support system for those who needed it. Soon, the pandemic hit and washed away a lot of hiking plans with it. Personally also, my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. What do I want to do professionally? Where do I want to be personally? In 2021, I was exhausted from working round the clock with global teams across time zones. That was taking a toll on my health and affecting my family. I knew I had to act if I wanted to retain my health and mental sanity. I had difficult questions I needed to answer to myself. After pondering for a few months, I decided to go along with the strong pull from the universe and give my passion project a try. It was now or never! The spark for MyTrailPals (My Transformative Purpose #MTP) was lit around Dec’2021 when after one of the hikes a girl gave me a hug and thanked me, sharing what a beautiful experience it was for her and how this one hike changed the trajectory of her life in many ways, unlocking the doors both at professional and personal levels which she was struggling with for so long. In September'2022 MyTrailPals was born. I had no idea if it would work or where it will take me but I promised myself that I am ready and I will enjoy every bit of this journey. Even if I am hiking in a local park where I have been a hundred times, subtle changes of something beautiful strikes awe in me. And this strike is all encompassing; it harnesses my spirit in presence. To me, nature is the most aesthetic thing to exist on earth. Everybody knows nature is beautiful, but it goes beyond simple beauty to the point of… dare I say it, feeling like a higher power? Undisturbed nature, that which has not been altered by humans, has a greater level of perfection, but any small piece, such as the fall leaves outside my window, can bring a sense of peace. That is really what nature brings… peace. Peace of mind, peace of heart, and relaxation. I find that most human-built spaces are not built from aesthetic inspiration. People can build artfully, and historically this was done, but today capitalism dominates, and thus our built spaces grate on the spirit. I find relief from the grind, from the struggle, in forests, rivers, lakes, meadows, clouds, the ocean, and even small things like liverworts or the leaf of a ginkgo biloba. In my effort to build a better world I work to bring humans into nature and to bring nature into human spaces. My two businesses, Village Ecosystems (watershed science) and Chickfly (pants with a fly that works for everybody), are the social and eco enterprises I have created to create synergistic benefits between humans and nature for the benefit of all.” Milauni Desai from Milpitas, CA, found solace on hikes when she restarted the activity after a long break. “I have been blessed amongst few who had the opportunity to go on short walks and long hikes as a young teenager back while growing up in india. With a long hiatus of almost three decades, I finally got to resume my passion to be outdoors in 2022, thanks to the amazing hikers community HikeQueen Buddies & MyTrailPals. Being on trail, in nature is the perfect yin to my yang - cathartic and therapeutic, grounding and uplifting, relaxing and energizing. The tall standing trees, the tiny bugs, the life erupting from fallen and burnt trees are all reminders for me to hold on and not give up, for there lies something stronger and beautiful to see and live for. Trails meander through nature's canvas. The wind rustles in the trees taking everything its path with it. Breathtaking outdoor vistas wait to be marvelled at, as beautiful as ever. Nature acts as a silent facilitator, weaving bonds that withstand the test of time. Time in nature, whether on a picnic, a hike or a rustic night in a tent is a place where friendships are born, nurtured, and etched into the very fabric of our lives. Here are two stories of how the great outdoors brought people together as friends. And their time in each other's company sowed the seed of enduring friendship beyond the trails. Anonymous Warrior from San Jose, CA “My nature learnings applicable on trails and life.” By owning your space you can set the pace. For me that is being present in the moment and focusing on my steps. It means adapting to the path based on my intuition and being in my shoes. Everyone experiences highs and lows but we must identify opportunities to grow along the way. Eventually, I will reach my destination crossing paths with amazing people. I call them friends. People who are my tribe and share my vibe. It is good to be prepared. Nature is full of surprises (both pleasant and unpleasant) like life. I am able to help myself by being well prepared (with no regrets). Few paths are closed at a certain time, but we discover new paths. In my time in the outdoors I learned to understand the different paths then analyze which one to consider. Looking forward to many more learnings. Sukanya from Dublin,CA started getting active later in life. How did nature inspire her to get there and then keep going? In her own words. “I started to workout when I was at the age of 42. And now at 57 - 15 yrs later- I am very proud to say that staying active and being in nature is my addiction. One fine day I decided to start running and it was not an easy journey. But I was persistent and right when I started in 2008, I got diagnosed with cancer. Had to go through Chemo and Radiation. I am proud to say that through my treatment I kept my running going. I ran almost every day - slow - but wore my shoes and got out. I truly believe to this day that my running helped me control my mind and body - mentally and physically - helped me get over the worst disease. I have now added Hiking to my routine. Nature and fresh air makes me appreciate life every single day. With 20 half marathons and so many mountain peaks that I have climbed to my credit including Everest Base Camp and Mt.Kilimanjaro- I am living a healthy life, full of energy, and strive to take on challenges every single day! Any form of exercise does wonders to our body and soul. It is the best medicine you will ever find. It boosts our energy, cures all diseases (I truly believe in that), helps us beat depression, stress, anxiety.. the list is endless. I strive to challenge myself to do better as my active pals (be it on trail or gym) inspire, motivate, encourage me, and root for each other, they are my support system. We plan adventures together and it's fun. They are my soulmates. Best part is what happens on trails stays there!🙂 We get our laughter therapy, life therapy, kitchen tips and recipes, many good advice! It is the best thing that happened to me!" From Sukanya’s journey you’ll notice the hardest thing was to put those shoes and to commit to moving. She started slow and built up the momentum. You just need to show up, the rest will fall in place. Sukanya kept making tiny strides that kept her focused on recovery and the future. Anything better than yesterday is progress, however tiny. She truly believes that running helped her control her mind and body’s reaction to her disease and helped her get over the worst times. Her message for those working towards a health goal - “Find your happy place to workout- whatever that maybe for you! That is the secret to keep at it! Happy Moving ♥️” Then there is Dhanashri Patel of Milpitas, CA who has always found solace in the embrace of nature away from the stress of everyday life. She shares how nature was a healing force during testing times and why she returns to its embrace often. “In the ebb and flow of life, I have always found solace in the embrace of nature. It's where I turn when uncertainty clouds my path, and the answers seem elusive. A simple walk becomes more than just a stroll; it transforms into a dialogue with my inner self, a conversation with the very essence of who I am. Nature has a way of unfolding the knots of confusion, gently guiding me towards clarity. With each step, I feel a profound connection to myself, a reunion with my core that often gets drowned in daily life. It always gives me a sense of passion and purpose. Last year brought with it a torrent of tragedy, leaving me grappling with grief and uncertainty and made me question my whole existence. A gathering of outdoorsy women and women-led outdoor brands. We gathered at the picturesque and tranquil North Fork Park in Eden, Utah. We camped under the open sky, whether in tents, RVs, or vans, fully immersing ourselves in nature. Our time was enriched by insightful discussions led by remarkable outdoorsy women who are leaving a positive mark on the world. - Watching A Century Of Sunrises
Imagine watching a century of beautiful sunrises as you begin your day. Or spending time with family as you take in a hundred years of sunsets. We live in the United States, the most prosperous country in the world. And yet, we are lonelier than ever, craving social connections, a need to belong, to be counted. Even before the pandemic, 20 percent of Americans who were 65 years or older, reported feeling socially isolated. Life expectancy has been dropping steadily for the last 4 years. Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, in his book, Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, he writes: “Loneliness ran like a dark thread through many of the more obvious issues that people brought to my attention, like addiction, violence, anxiety, and depression. . . . Clearly there was something about our disconnection from one another that was making people’s lives worse than they had to be.” So, if more prosperity doesn’t seem to work for us, what could? Enter, the Blue Zones As shown in his recent Netflix documentary (Live to 100, Secrets of the Blue Zones), Dan Buettner travelled the world searching for pockets of longevity. He found it in five disparate communities with a common thread running through them all - the interconnectedness in their way of life and the role of nature in building the social fabric. He called these communities, the Blue Zones. During his travels, Dan observed, “My thoughts returned to the Blue Zones, where I’d learned the priceless value of slowing down, of engaging in long conversations with a neighbor, of unrushed family dinners, of eating low off the food chain, and of cooking at home. Of walking to the places I need to go—and if they were too far away, of moving closer to them. Of getting closer to family, to beauty, to nature, and to the rhythms of life” What a beautiful way to live! We’ve realized that loneliness has a cost Our social connections aren’t a luxury; they’re critical to our physical and mental well-being. Loneliness causes depression, dementia and cognitive dysfunction and now, there is also robust evidence that social neglect increases risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and premature mortality. Loneliness also affects the immune system. It is ironic, the very thing that protected us in the pandemic - isolation - also negatively affects our immunity. It is clear from numerous studies, that we function less efficiently when we are denied the pleasures that social connections. Throughout life, we have a variety of relationships and we need almost all of them to lead a happy and healthy life. What are the people in the Blue Zones doing differently? Here are some of the key findings that Dan shares about people in the Blue Zones: Blue Zones are invariably located close to nature, where trails, streams, forests and hills are easily accessible to the people. Spending time outdoors is both a necessity and a priority and contribute to overall well-being. People in the blue zones live active lives. They move around every 20 minutes or - walking around, doing chores, housework or visiting friends. Walking is the primary means of commute. They don’t have a gym regime, instead, activity is part of their daily routines - cleaning, cooking, gardening, woodworking, everything that they need to live. Many Blue Zone inhabitants follow a primarily plant-based diet rich in vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. The social fabric is strongly woven such that everyone has friends and family to spend time with, laugh, share joys and food with. The community is organized around interest groups - exercise, faith, hobby or community welfare. A sense of purpose and engagement with life, even in older age, is often cited as a key factor in longevity. There is an active give and take that builds a thriving community spirit in all residents. Deliberate time in Nature Folks in Blue Zones are there for each other. Until a couple of decades ago, they were more independent of outside help than before. How did they build this culture of care? When spending significant time outside, the Blue Zone residents automatically included walks, foraging, sharing food, building fires, alongside more traditional active conservation activity like planting, clearing and coppicing. Feeling present and “held” in their natural environments nurtured positive forms of social connection among them. Friendships and relationships originating in a cooperative way of life, are usually lifelong. Time in nature, the hardiness of their life has taught them the importance of a social network to rely on or fall back on. An additional benefit of nature driven wellness is that what we consider precious, we save. All "Blue Zone" communities lean towards less invasive approaches to farming, animal rearing or clearing forests. This is as close as we can get to the natural rhythm of human life as it was meant to be.
