Hidden Lake Park: Milpitas’ Little Hidden Gem for a Peaceful Walk

Sometimes, you don’t need to drive somewhere far away to feel like you’ve gotten away.

For me, that place is Hidden Lake Park in Milpitas.

Tucked quietly among the Hidden Lake townhomes, this small, man-made lake and its paved walking loop have become one of my favorite places for an evening reset. It’s where I go with my family, neighbors, and, of course, my dog Milo.

And over time, something has surprised me even more than the lake itself:

How many Milpitas residents didn’t know it was there.

As I started planning evening walks around Hidden Lake, I’d often meet Milpitas residents along the way. More than once, I was surprised to hear someone say they had lived in Milpitas for years but had never known about the Hidden Lake loop.

Some had driven along Milpitas Boulevard regularly for years, passing right by the area, without ever realizing that this peaceful little lake and walking path were tucked away just nearby.

It truly makes you appreciate the name Hidden Lake.

Because this lake really is hidden. :)

And perhaps that’s part of what makes discovering it so special.

A peaceful 0.4-mile walk hiding in plain sight

The loop around Hidden Lake is only about 0.4 miles, but you can simply keep looping around the lake to add more miles, making your walk as short or as long as you’d like.

It’s a beautiful little paved loop that circles the lake, with townhomes all around it and plenty of open sky and quiet spots to pause and take in the view.

The small parking lot can get busy on summer evenings, and there is also some street-side parking nearby. Even with a little more activity during the busier hours, the loop itself has a peaceful neighborhood feel that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy a walk around the lake.

There’s something calming about walking beside the water, especially in the evening. A short walk can turn into a longer conversation with a neighbor, a few extra minutes sitting by the water, or simply a chance to breathe after a busy day.

For me, it has become an easy evening reenergizing walk—no driving across the Bay Area, no complicated planning, just comfortable shoes and out the door.

Sometimes, that’s all you need.

Sunset walks at Hidden Lake

One of my favorite times to visit is around sunset.

The lake comes alive at sunset, with gorgeous colors spreading across the evening sky and reflecting beautifully on the water. It’s the kind of view that makes you want to slow down, take a breath, and stay just a little longer.

And a full moon night can be equally breathtaking. Climb up toward the Berryessa Creek Trail to catch the moonrise, then look back toward Hidden Lake as the moonlight reflects across the water. It’s a completely different kind of magic—quiet, peaceful, and absolutely worth experiencing.

There are beautiful seating benches around the lake that make it easy to stop and enjoy the surroundings.

On summer evenings, you’ll often see groups of elderly residents sitting together on the benches, chatting and enjoying the outdoors. Some are elderly parents visiting their children and grandchildren, spending a relaxed evening together by the lake.

There’s something really lovely about seeing this little outdoor space come alive as a neighborhood gathering place—where generations can slow down, catch up, and simply enjoy being outside together.

A little lake with ducks, turtles and fishing

The lake itself adds to the charm.

You’ll often spot ducks on the water and small turtles sunbathing on the rocks, sometimes so perfectly camouflaged that you might walk right past them. Kids especially love spotting the little turtles, turning each walk into a mini turtle-finding adventure.

The lake is also a perfect little spot to practice fishing. You’ll often see folks around the water with their fishing hooks, patiently casting a line and enjoying some quiet time by the lake.

For kids, the loop is also a fun place to ride a bike while parents get some walking time in.

You can come for 20 minutes, walk a lap, watch the ducks, look for turtles, say hello to a neighbor, or spend some time fishing—and head home feeling a little more refreshed.

Or, if you’re looking for a little more movement, just keep going around the loop and add another mile—or two—to your walk.

And then there’s Milo

For Milo, our walks around Hidden Lake have become their own little adventure.

Milo has met so many friends around this loop. He loves stopping to sniff, play and say hello to his dog friends—and, of course, their dog parents.

Milo has also become my little social connector here. Through our walks, I’ve gotten to meet so many dog owners and their pups. A quick hello between Milo and another dog often turns into a conversation between the dog parents—and sometimes the beginning of a little dog social circle.

Over time, familiar faces become familiar friends.

That’s one of the things I love most about Hidden Lake.

It’s not just a walking trail.

It’s a place to connect—with nature, with neighbors, with family, and with our four-legged friends.

Let’s make neighborhood walks a thing

This is also why I started planning walks around Hidden Lake through MyTrailPals.

MyTrailPals is built around a simple idea: getting outdoors is better together.

You don't always need to organize a big hike or drive somewhere far away. Sometimes you just need a few people who want to step outside and walk.

A neighborhood walk can be a wonderful way to meet people, get some movement, discover places close to home, and build a stronger sense of community.

And Hidden Lake feels like the perfect place for that.

A small lake.

A short paved loop.

A few benches.

Some ducks and turtles.

Kids excited to spot turtles sunbathing on the rocks.

People casting fishing lines.

A beautiful sunset.

A full moon rising over the lake.

Milo happily sniffing his way around the trail and meeting his friends.

And neighbors who might become walking buddies.

Have you discovered Hidden Lake yet?

If you live in Milpitas and haven’t discovered Hidden Lake, add it to your next evening walk. Bring your family, a neighbor, or your four-legged walking buddy—and take a lap, catch the sunset, or simply slow down by the water.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, adventure, connection, and a little bit of nature are hiding right in our own backyard.

Maybe that’s the magic of Hidden Lake.
